The Madonna Immacolata is a portrayal of Mary, Mother of God. It symbolises the Immaculate Conception of Mary, who was free of the taint of Original Sin. In the Middle Ages this dogma, which is not stated in the Bible, was passionately discussed within the church. It was only on 8th December 1854 that Pope Pius IX confirmed this statement of faith in his dogmatic Bull “Ineffabilis Deus” (“Ineffable God”). To commemorate this, he had a column with a bronze figure of the Madonna Immacolata erected on the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. This was made according to the descriptions of the visions of the mystic and nun Catherine Labouré. The Madonna Immacolata is often depicted standing on a globe, her foot resting on the head of a serpent as a symbol of the triumph over original sin. This depiction with the globe and the serpent is also found on the well-known “Miraculous Medallion”. Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic dogma of faith and is celebrated on December 8th, nine months before the Feast of Mary’s birth.
